old school

now, this may come as a total shock to some of you, but…i like retro stuff.

yes. i know. you never would have guessed. my glasses and logo would tip off only the super-stealthiest of sleuths.

but i do!

which is why i am dedicating this whole post to new/recent finds that make my heart go pitter-patter with glee.

1. dave and polly. they’re getting married in tiverton, ri in september, and i’m excited, because we’ve got the same sort of aesthetic sense, i think. (well, it’s a safe assumption based on their wedding website, and the fact that she wore a SUPER CUTE polka-dotted top to our meeting.) they also won major points with me for…well, that deserves a number 2.

2. the friendly toast-portsmouth, nh. polly and i were discussing where we should meet, and even though they’re in boston, she said, “we’re always up for a visit to the friendly toast!” i thought, hmmm, this must be some kinda place if they’re VOLUNTEERING to drive over an hour north just to experience its goodness. and lo. it IS. it is AWESOME. it’s…hard to describe, too. all the tables/chairs/decorations/dishes are 100% gen-yoo-wine mid-century americana relics. it’s magnificent. and the food is awesome, too. my new favourite is the “almond joy” pancakes (sans almonds, so…really, more “mounds” pancakes.) they’re giant, big-as-your-plate flapjacks with coconut and chocolate chips. mmmmmm. open 24 hours. go. you won’t regret it.

3. at ben and claire’s wedding brian and natalie introduced themselves. they’ve got a letterpress business down in boston called dick and jane letterpress (recently written up in, uh, some…local wedding mag…as the most affordable option around for letterpressed invites! they told me what publication it was, but i forgot, and google didn’t help.) anyway, they’re both super fun, hip people, and their site design is quirky, cool, and professional. so…if you’re looking for an invite solution, check ’em out. tell them i sent you. (also, natalie plays harp at weddings sometimes, so…you could possibly kill 2 birds with one stone here.)

4. moxie design studios. i don’t have any need of design services right now, but if i did…they’re the first place i’d head. i lovelovelove their work. (the kind of love where you just sorta…visit the site every day just because it’s so cute and inspiring.)

leave me links if you’ve got anything else you think i’d love!

Friendly Toast! OOOOOOOH… Nick and I went there on our drive through Portsmouth on your suggestion. Amazing. We’re hoping to go back on some other near-future day trip, because… that menu was overwhelming and all looked so good….

PS – i love nat and b.

claire & ben

you’ve already seen a couple sneak peeks from claire and ben’s fantastic new england wedding…but settle in for a more comprehensive overview of their celebration. (doesn’t comprehensive overview make it sound like it’s going to be the most boring thing ever? that’s basically the most inaccurate description ever.)

bek-the-sister and i got there early so we could scout out the locations…which is always a good plan. the forecast had been calling for rain and general grey and gloominess, so i was ecstatic that we had bright, blue skies.

to go with the postcard perfect new england church.

claire is a minister and she went to harvard…when ben saw me setting up this shot (oh yes, he saw the dress. shocking!) he said, “her dress and books…2 of her favourite things!”

i think this is my favourite bridal shoe shot EVER.

the best woman and the bride’s sister helping her get ready.

ben needed to get prettied up, too.

we had plenty of time before the ceremony to get the close friends and bride and groom photos taken before festivities really began. it made the day flow SOOO smoothly. claire and ben were only away from their guests for about 15-20 minutes…the amt of time it took for us to get the big group/family photos taken. if you’re not super traditional, it’s DEFINITELY worth getting as many of these things done before the ceremony as you can.

they even took the huppa for a test run…so the pole-holders (?) could practice their duties. the words on the banner say, “i am my beloved’s and he is mine.” which i used to know how to write in hebrew. but not anymore. sorry.

then ben had a minute, so he practiced for his american idol audition.

aren’t they the cutest EVER?

if any of you have super duper memories, you’ll remember from their engagement session post…claire pronounced after telling me that she likes to smell ben’s head, “pheremones: they’re real!”

aren’t her flowers cheery?

the light inside this church was DELICIOUS. oh yes…light can be delicious. just trust me on that one.

the best part of the ceremony was when they were reciting the vows. it was ben’s turn, and claire was–understandably–a bit misty eyed. ben leaned forward and said, “you’re DISTRACTING me!” i just about melted into a puddle right there in the front pew of the church.

bek-the-sister took this one from the balcony…i love the joy and movement! also, see in the top left corner the super cute lady in the polka dotted dress? that’s ben’s adorable mom, carol (hi carol!), and she should watch herself, because i’m gonna find her and steal her dress!

there were lots of great moments from the reception, but i’ve gotten carried away again, so i will leave you with one last photo…a tribute to claire’s amazing sister lauren (who looks a lot like debra messing and who has the best facial expressions!) and who made about a bajillion cupcakes for claire and ben. (they were delicious.)

the newlyweds agree!

i’ll let you experience the “comprehensive overview” of this delightful celebration via the slideshow. if you’re interested in ordering prints or just seeing the rest of the photos, click on the shopping cart icon. enjoy!

These photos are amaaaaazing. By the way, that was the first time I’ve been compared to Debra Messing… if only my hair were still a foot longer!
I’m ordering a bunch of prints, but this is my favorite: http://gwynethcolleen.com/clients/index.php?do=photocart&viewImage=7411

“Hi” back at you, Gwyn, and thank you for all the fabulous pix of Claire and Benjamin.

Claire11 March 2008 - 12:16

Aww this post made me tear up a bit…and I confess I am a little obsessed with looking at our photos because they are all so beautiful. Thank you Gwyn!

[…] at ben and claire’s wedding brian and natalie introduced themselves. they’ve got a letterpress business down in […]

unexpectedly awesome day

ok, not entirely unexpected.

but…despite the horrible, wretched weather, i had a fantabulous day. that even started out with an excellent hairday. (the rain ruined that and left me frizzyheaded, but i have a couple bits of photographic evidence that my medusahead was at least temporarily tamed!)

haha! i’m such a dork.

but then again, i am also a freaking awesome rockstar. but mostly a dork.

one last “my hair is not completely out of control photo. these days are few and far between, so, when they happen, i like to make sure they’re preserved so i don’t lose hope entirely and shave my head.

i went to newburyport, ma (always a good time) to meet the fabulous shyla for brunch and some photo adventuring. while i was walking to our meeting place, i spied ben’s mom driving by…funny coincidence, and i was so excited to be able to tell her the photos were ready!

(i had a few minutes waiting for our meeting time, so i had to capture my beloved vw’s front grille and some of the funky red berries that were adding a splash of colour to the mostly dead foliage around the parking lot.)

then shyla and i wound up at fowle’s soda/cigar/cafe shop…a very strange amalgamation that is charming and has delicious breakfast food. i got the lemon and raspberry french toast, and she got the always-a-good-choice eggs benedict.

the server saw me taking photos of the food, and he said, “it tastes as good as it looks.” when he came to clear the plates, he said, “was i right? did it taste as good as it looked?” we assured him that it was delicious. probably should have just clarified at the beginning, “um…photographers. we record any/everything. y’know…for internet purposes.”

please note that this is not an out-of-focus picture. i got one of those kiwi seeds in focus. and, uh…i meant to do that. yeah.
(side note: i don’t eat kiwis. mostly because one time when i was in about 6th grade, i cut one up, and it made my hands break out. i figured…probably shouldn’t put something INSIDE me that gave me a reaction on the outside. also, in new zealand–where i’ve spent significant time–they always call it “kiwifruit”, because kiwis are what they call themselves, and also an indigenous nocturnal bird. never let it be said that my blog is not educational.)

then, even though it was raining and generally horrid/wretched/awful-in-most-every-way out, we HAD to take some photos. mostly shy shot me (because i did, after all, bring my red and white polka dotted rainboots and giant polka dotted umbrella. i’m sure she’ll get those up sometime, and i’ll let you all see me jumping in puddles and off of sculptures, etc.)

i did get to grab a couple of her. she’s a truly, truly lovely person. her laugh is infectious, she has the best smile i think i’ve ever seen, and her eyes are GAWGEOUS, dahling! it was one of those, “wow, i just met you, but i know we’re going to be great friends” sort of brunches.

check out that infectious laugh!

and those gorgeous blue eyes! (um, we set the camera on the dash and tried to get on the same focal plane. uh…didn’t work. so…i’m fuzzy. but that’s ok. you guys know what i look like. :-D)

one last one…we were warming up in her car…that rain was COLD! i took off my rain-speckled glasses and just had to grab a shot of them sitting on the dashboard.

i hope you all managed to find fun things to fill this rainy saturday with!
