in the beginning, i loved everything that pushed the boundary on “traditional”. anything that created extra interest in the end-product photos. now…now i’m happy to photograph anything that happens. i know that couples make the choices they make thoughtfully…and as such, it’s a priority for them. which means it’s a priority to me.

a few years ago, if anyone had asked me what i thought of receiving lines, i probably would have said that they took time and didn’t provide great photo ops. NOW…i will amend that to say that they take time, but can provide an amazing opportunity to get candids of most of the wedding guests looking happy fairly quickly. they may not look as delighted the whole rest of the day as they will when they are congratulating the newly married couple. if the receiving line takes place in pleasing conditions (good light, colorful backdrop), in the span of 15 minutes, not only will the bride and groom get to thank each and every person who went out of his or her way to attend the celebration…the photographer can capture all those beloved faces with consistent exposures…which is GREAT for wedding albums!

i’ve been thinking about this a lot the last few days while designing an album layout for a wedding i photographed in october. the receiving line took place outdoors in a garden, so the light was gorgeous and there were still flowers blooming all around. having these images as part of the record of the day enabled me to design this…which is one of my favorite album layouts ever! i love the colors, and i love being able to include so many of the couple’s favorite people in their album…the book they’re going to treasure and look at every time they want to relive the day they promised each other forever!

tips if you’re considering having a receiving line:

*if possible–do it outside! pick a location that has lots of pretty colors and good light. (i also loved the images from a receiving line that took place inside in a greenhouse. that soft filtered light was GORGEOUS.)
*make sure your photographer knows you’d love to have lots of images of your guests as you greet them. to create layouts like this, your photographer(s) will also need to take a few moments to capture the scene-setting details.
*have a plan: ensure that everyone in the receiving line knows he/she is supposed to be in the line, where it will be happening, the order to line up in, and how soon after the ceremony it will be (will everyone exit and immediately line up, or will the bride and groom take a breather prior to greeting their guests?)

paul had been waiting for this day for a very long time. i loved seeing the emotion on their faces as they prepared to promise each other everything.

one of the best parts about having 2 photographers, especially in a church ceremony, is the ability to get multiple perspectives without moving around and being distracting. for this ceremony, gail hung out in the balcony, and i sat up front to get a more intimate perspective.the grandma. i LOVE this picture.this one was all gail; she was practically hanging out the car window to get it while i navigated the chinatown traffic.

chinese weddings often have a lengthy break between the ceremony and the reception. in our case, this worked out wonderfully, as there was PLENTY of time to explore boston and get some killer portraits. naomi and paul did their homework; they knew EXACTLY where they wanted to go. we started off at the boston public library. the security guard told us we couldn’t go in, but deigned to allow us a few minutes in the outer lobby.

but naomi was NOT having that. when we were done using that space, she said, “let’s walk around and try the other side.” which, of course, made me want to hug her.

i was kind of afraid of the security guard, i’m not gonna lie, but we had absolutely zero trouble getting in through another entrance…and i am so glad we persevered! the image on top is gail’s, i believe, and the one below is my perspective.

after making good use of the stunning boston public library, we had time to grab a few shots in chinatown that showed off the interesting architectural details. then it was time to head back to the reception.

shooting the rings is one of my favorite things to do at every wedding…it’s such a fun challenge to find interesting colors and textures in what is available in the immediate area. the above picture makes use of one of their bamboo centerpieces. in the bottom picture, the sparklies in the back are from naomi’s bracelet, and i set them all on some stainless steel catering equipment in an area of the restaurant that wasn’t being used…i love the reflection!

at asian weddings, it is customary for the bride and groom to go to each table to greet their guests. each table chooses a representative who presents the couple with gifts and reads words of support and wisdom.

another interesting practice i’ve never seen before was…games! this is the tail end of an epic musical chairs battle. they had (pretty awesome) prizes for the winners.

beth has a totally great story about this dress…it’s a vera wang (right, beth?) which she preselected before seeing it or trying it on.  she found a listing on craigslist and went, by herself, after dark, to chinatown to purchase it.  totally worth the trip.  it was gorgeous.

beth got ready at the ADORABLE inn at camden place.  i don’t think i’ve ever ever ever seen an inn that was so lovely and simultaneously homey and inviting.  walking through the halls, it really felt like i was walking through a home…with the modern amenities and privacy you look for in a hotel.

this photo of beth’s ring also has significance.  beth is a self-professed candy-a-holic, and as it was her birthday two days before her wedding, i bought her some gummy bears to help mark the occasion.  and, of course, had to use a couple to showcase her beautiful ring.

and while i was shooting the ladies, the ever talented tomme hilton, who flew up from SC to help me capture this wedding, was photographing the handsome groom and his men.

their flowergirl was RIDICULOUSLY cute.

after the ceremony we took a little drive up the road to this abandoned barn i’d noticed on the way in.  the colors and the wildflowers growing in front perfectly matched the feel of beth’s aesthetic and details…gorgeous and effortless.

and what would a wedding in maine be without a picture by the sea?

i loved how they brought both of their cultural traditions in to their celebration…from the lebanese cookies as a favor, to circling up to do the hora later on in the evening.

but i’m getting a little ahead of myself…ahead of their beautiful first dance.

a couple weeks ago i went and hung out with alanna + bobby in newburyport.  they. are. so. FUN!  they’re getting married exactly ONE MONTH from today!  in key west!  yeah…it’s going to be sheer TORTURE going down to florida to photograph their fabulousness with their families.  please…wear black and pray for me and all those other things you do in solidarity and mourning.

we met at maudslay state park…i’ve photographed there before…it’s a big, sprawling nature reserve (word to the wise:  if you’ve gotta pee…do it at the facilities near the parking lot…rather than, y’know, setting off walking for miles without heeding nature’s call.) with LOTS of options…beautiful stone walls, waterfalls, views of the merrimac river, gardens, and there’s even archeological ruins!

this session, though, was all about the light.  you’ll see what i mean.  without further ado…

this may very well be my absolute favorite image from the entire session.  i love seeing alanna be herself…and bobby unable to get enough of it.

in case you haven’t seen from all the other photos…alanna’s eyes are UH-MAZE-ING.  amazing.  totally gorgeous.

you can see in this picture how lovely the printing is…it is detailed and vibrant…the best i’ve seen in a press-printed album yet…and i’ve ordered from several vendors…and been happy with them!
my other favorite thing about this book is how completely wonderful the texture on this paper is.  it reminds me of high-end watercolor paper.

so…i have to give jen some MAJOR props…kudos…accolades…whatever vocab word you want to use, she deserves them all.  the part of the park i wanted to shoot in?  yeah…it wasn’t so much “open” as it was “gated and chained with a padlock.”  HOWEVER!  no problem!  just climb through these bushes, and down these enormous boulders, onto a beach, and then back up some more boulders and voila!  we’re there!  and jen was totally up for it.  and…the resulting images are SO worth all of our clambering around.

yesterday’s wedding was uh-mazing. no…that’s not extreme enough. it was AMAZING.

today i met up with jess & matt who’re getting married in a couple months in maryland. we wandered around and enjoyed spring in NYC.

i’ve gotta give props to both these fantastic couples…jen hiked over some rather sizable boulders…in her wedding dress! (she agrees the photos are SO worth it, though) and jess & matt didn’t blink when i suggested we ignore fences…and hop up on a vintage truck that was waiting around to be on a movie set. YOU ALL ROCK.

and now. i think i will go to sleep.

when i got there, erin was pretty much ready. i didn’t mind, as it gave us time to get some amazing photos before we headed off to the church.

man and wife, say man and wife! (sorry, i just recently read “the princess bride”…and then followed it up by watching the movie. btw…the book is highly recommended!)

this may be one of my favorite bridal party pictures EVER. however…let me just tell you what i was doing to GET this image. 1. i was straddling the other side of the bride. i think most of those guys were on the balls of their feet ready to dash across the bride to grab me in case i looked like i was going over. (they were being overly cautious. benefit to being short: awesome center of gravity/balance!) 2. holding the camera OVER my head to get enough space between the subjects and the lens to fit them all in there. this was one lucky snap. it’s hard to frame something when you can’t SEE it! anyway, i think it was all worth it, don’t you agree?

another behind the scenes look: (which will not be surprising to anyone i have photographed before) i was laying on the ground to get this shot. my hs volleyball coach used to yell at me for diving for the ball instead of moving my feet, but…it’s working for me NOW, isn’t it miss strain!

how much do you love the seersucker suits? (correct answer: SO MUCH!)

one of the problems with being a delinquent blogger is you sometimes forget the story behind the photo…like, there’s a reason they’re drinking beer (i want to say it’s because…they really like beer. and they were thirsty, but it MIGHT be more meaningful…but i am a delinquent blogger, so i can’t remember.) also, the 2004 sign on the bridge is perfect, because that is the year they met. or got together. something important. (see: delinquent blogger.)

jody was claire’s maid of honor in july last year, and after claire & bobby’s wedding, she contacted me about traveling down to NJ to photograph her wedding.

matt really wanted pictures of his grandpa helping him put on his tie…and i’m SO glad he specifically requested these. they’re some of my favorites from the whole day!

pretty much everyone at the entire wedding doted on this little girl…and, like smart little girls everywhere, she gobbled it right up.

sometimes, when i’m doing family pictures…i tell everyone to pretend they’re on a roller coaster. there are a few reasons for this…
1) because who doesn’t look happy and excited when they’re on a roller coaster? especially if it’s just a pretend one that isn’t actually high up in the air…
2) for the POWAH! it’s intoxicating.

i probably took 100 images trying to get the motion blur in the windows, but i’m glad i persevered!

it was a really cold day, and they’d hired this fabulous trolley to take everyone between the ceremony and reception sites…so we made the most of it!

jody & matt, thanks for inviting me to join your celebration. sorry i’m the world’s most disorganized and delinquent blogger ever, and it took me so long to write about you guys.

the whole day was perfect…relaxed and elegant, just like jason and barrett. (well, the flower girls weren’t particularly relaxed and elegant so much as little firecrackers more full of energy and spunk than any 3 little girls i think i’ve ever met.)

can you guess what happened next?

(don’t worry; the blow dryer did the trick. silk shantung can handle champagne or water and dry gracefully. however, it does not do as well with breastmilk. just for reference.)

barrett’s dad picked everyone up in the roxbury latin school bus for the short trip over to campus. jason was waiting so he could get a first look at his beautiful bride.

they wanted to do all the group pictures before the ceremony (so they could enjoy their cocktail hour), which i love!  their bridal party was lots of fun, and when i told them to do something silly…they totally went with it.  (it was a full mass ceremony, and there is usually a point in the service where the priest exhorts people to greet one another.  so i told the bridal party to do that…and then i couldn’t talk for 3 minutes because i was laughing too hard.  see?)

there are so many things i love about this picture…so many fantastic expressions!

after the ceremony, it was time for my very favorite part: bride & groom portraits. wedding days usually move super quickly…it’s always a creative challenge to take the tiny slice of time allotted for these pictures, and make it feel like there were no time constraints…only time for love and beauty and creativity. i think jason, barrett, and i slam-dunked this in our 15 minutes.

first dance. what i love so, so, so much about this image…they are flanked by their respective parents…and they’re even on the right sides! and i didn’t arrange it…i just got in the right place at the right time.

after the parent dances, everyone started to get their dance on…but my time at the party was drawing to a close.

but…tip: if you want to get me to stay a little later, even after i’ve already checked in and we’ve said, “ok, we’re all good”…have the DJ start playing “sweet caroline” as i’m heading out. i am a new england girl, and i physically canNOT make myself leave until after the last note has played.

(barrett & jason are very savvy and cunning people, and they did this very thing. and i THANK them for it. a new england wedding with dancing is not complete until sweet caroline has had its playtime. i’m just saying.)

last weekend i went up to the maritimes to photograph the amazing and wonderful sean & sarah.  perhaps you remember amanda & matt?  well, amanda’s maid of honor was sarah.  i stayed in touch with her and her boyfriend zach through facebook (wooo, facebook!)  zach works with sean…who happened to be engaged to a different sarah.  zach sent me a message asking if i was available 10/10…and the rest is history.

i’ve got a LOT of favorites from this wedding.  so, please bear with me. 

i started the day off with sean, and his brother/best man sandy.

i know. sandy SHOULD be a male model. i already told him so.

sean really wanted a picture of the two of them…in wellies, of course…down in this boggy marsh area. of course i said, “sure! let’s go for it!”

when you’re in the middle of rural nova scotia…you can walk up the middle of the road, and it’s no big deal.

then we headed back to the family farm (where the wedding was taking place) for one of my favorite parts of the day: the first time the groom sees his bride. when i was going through the images, i had to keep every single one from the series. i don’t know if i’ve ever seen a more emotional first look.

the moms and sarah’s sister and friends looked on. i don’t think any of them had dry eyes!

next up was bride & groom portrait time. my other favorite part of the day! (shut up. i have a lot of favorites.)

(yes, this does look beautiful and romantic…but it was also sort of practical. it POURED the day before the wedding and drizzled off and on the day of, so sean was protecting poor sarah’s dress. very gallant, no?)

we headed over to sarah’s family’s cottage…they lived in halifax, but the essence of their family resides at this cottage. her dad was there, so i made him turn around before he could look at her.

then sarah got carried around the yard for some more photo ops. in keeping with his forebears, sean scrapped the romantic threshhold carry and went for the village raiding method.

sean works for the canadian version of REI…most of his friends are of the intrepid, wilderness-junkie types. there was a whole village of TENT-CAMPERS. in the muddy, wet, wet, wet fields. and yet, they look so happy! amazing.

the fam has a vintage, mint jag that was slotted for the getaway vehicle. and sarah looks totally fierce, right?

continuing in the transportation theme…i actually flagged sean down as he was whizzing around the property on this old scooter…photo op time!

sean’s dad showed up in military bagpiper regalia…which, of course, was AWESOME.

i thought this image of sean’s mom, carol, perfectly encapsulated the feel of the day. no one let the elements win. everything was still graceful and beautiful and elegant…but the boots were never far from reach.

i could, of course, keep going, but since i think there are already 30 something photos in this post, i’ll stop. it was an amazing day, and everyone made me feel so welcome and included. their families were simply amazing…no one let the rain or changed plans get them down.  ugh.  i’m leaving so much out…basically, i love canada & sean & sarah (& zach & sarah for the introduction!)

next up:  my adventures with zach & sarah & baby stella around the maritimes.  (yeah, i went to green gables.)

so, first off…the way i met sarah & jeff is a really, really funny story…and you should ask me sometime, and i will tell you, but i will not tell the entire internet.  sry.  (i know, i’m a TEASE!)

sarah comes from a big family.  like…she’s the 2nd oldest of 8 children.  7 of whom are girls.  one of the things i like about families like this is the spirit of cooperation and camaraderie they exhibit…a wedding becomes a collective project…everyone takes on a task or two and they pour their love and affection into everything and make it happen.  sarah’s wedding was no exception, but…her family largely lives in saint louis and the wedding was in nh.  sarah & jeff still wanted their wedding to have that community project feel, but the logistics of finishing up all the projects in the week before was just a little unrealistic, so their nh family banded together and pulled off a pretty amazing shindig.  friends volunteered to buy and prepare tasty picnic eats for all the guests (and it was goooood…chicken kabobs and grilled veggies! a rice dish (that i didn’t try because i’m a weirdo picky eater), chips and salsa, lemonade, peach tea, and ice cold refreshing water.)  everyone got plenty to eat…pretty fantastic.  watching the friends who volunteered to collect and transport the grills, the ones who helped prepare the food, the ones on grill duty all arrive at the beach the morning of the ceremony was a testament to the kind of people jeff and sarah are; people love them and gather around them to demonstrate their love and support.  i feel privileged to be included in that nh family that helped make this day a reality.  (sarah’s family was here the week before and made the cupcakes, threw her a bridal brunch, helped them pack their truck to move–oh, did i forget to mention they’re driving off to TN 3 days after their wedding date so jeff can start his new professor job?  they are.  both families were in town and were no slouches when it came to participating in projects left to tend to.)

if you’ve been in new england for more than 3 days this summer, chances are, it’s rained at least 2 of them.  the day started off grey with ominous drops appearing sporadically on my windshield as we drove to rye harbour.  they held off, though, and gwyn-the-photographer rejoiced at the even, grey clouds that covered the sky and diffused the light beautifully.  father michael of st. george’s delivered a touching homily–the kind only an officiant who knows and loves the couple pledging themselves to each other can prepare.  jeff and sarah served communion to the astonishing number of people who came from near and far with 2 months notice to celebrate their marriage.  and right as the ceremony was concluding…the sun came out and shone down upon them.  (everyone else was amazed and awed and touched.  gwyn-the-photographer thought, “DANGIT…there goes my perfect midday lighting!”  gwyn-the-friend agreed that it was a beautifully symbolic moment.)

this is adam. he and his bike had a run-in with the front end of a car about 2 weeks ago…miraculously, God had his hand on him, and his injuries were relatively superficial considering that his helmet broke the windshield. it’s amazing that he was still able to play the songs he’d been preparing for sarah & jeff. (some of my favourites! “come thou fount of every blessing” and “be thou my vision”.)

they got choked up as they were saying, “in the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit, i honour you.” i was so glad to see how overcome they were by the weight of what they were promising each other…i know they will love each other well, and their relationship gives me hope…they are proof that it’s worth waiting for the right person.

this chuppah was one of my contributions to the day. becky and i made it for another mutual friend’s beach wedding, and i thought, hey! that should be reused for sarah & jeff’s wedding! in case you’re wondering, 8 foot poles WILL fit in a volkswagen golf…run them diagonally from the front passenger seat through the rear driver’s side window.

her other nephew, luther, is a delightful urchin…the clover, the bits of…whatever…clinging to his face…the RAAAAHHHH facial expression…i showed this image to sarah whose reaction was, “this is SO HIM!”

they asked me to submit this one to at&t for their advertising campaign…(ok, not really, but it’s funny, right?)

like i said, the sun came out right at the end of the ceremony, so the only place with even lighting in the harsh noon sun was against this blue wall. we decided to have some fun with the bridal party (or rather, i very wisely intuited that this group would NOT get serious for me…so i might as well embrace it!)

i think those might deserve their own post, though, so…tune in later!
(i have to be up in about 4 hours to meet the happy couple for breakfast before they desert me for the hills of tennessee.)

kate & chris are seriously fabulous, and their wedding was wonderful and beautiful (and, of course, organised perfectly by cityside events.)

becky and i are totally amused that we unwittingly made the same face/did the same thing…(also, yes, she DID just have that 5 month old baby in the picture.  and yes.  i DO sometimes hate her.  and yes, it does pain me to put a picture of myself next to her.  there…are you happy you dragged all that out of me?  i need a counseling session now.)

tammy was taking a photo of the bride’s parents and their lifelong friends…and raegan decided she wanted to be in the picture, too. GOSH i love that woman!

we left off at the end of the ceremony.  right after the ceremony is usually when family members assemble, line up, and smile.  as you’ll see…when i’ve got the time and willing participants…i like to have a little fun with the most traditional type of photos i normally take on a wedding day.

nicki’s sister made sure shane knew no one was going to tolerate any sort of shenanigans from him…and nicki was just a sweet older sister.

so, i think i’ve mentioned before that i love to shoot the groomsmen…something about the suits/tuxes/UNIFORMS! sparks my creativity…and i have lots of fun with it.  also…i should probably see someone about this, but i derive a strange sense of enjoyment from making them do ridiculous/silly/awesome things.  like pretend they’re cracking each other up in a random field.  you know…as you do.

so…see that guy on the left on the end? i don’t know what his real name is. know why? well, let me back up. as a wedding photographer, i spend about 6 days a week by myself–which suits little introvert me–and on the 7th day, i have to be the person at the party who remembers everyone’s name…whose jokes are snappy and lively…who gets things done and makes you smile while doing it. so, i work really hard to remember key peoples’ names…key people like…groomsmen. so, the guy on the end told me his name was ernie. so i called him ernie. repeatedly. “ok, ernie, please turn to face me a little bit more. ok…square your shoulders. right. perfect…and…smile everyone!”

then we were doing shots of the entire group…i called him ernie again, and the ladies looked at me blankly. “who’s ernie?” the rest of the guys laughed, and he sheepishly admitted that ernie was not, in fact, his name. it’s a squadron joke the guys have…whenever they go somewhere, one of them is always ernie. which…i have to admit…is kind of funny, even if it DID make me feel pretty stupid at the time!

this is probably my FAVOURITE bridal party shot of all time. i told them, “ok, now the inspiration for this is…’TAKE THE HILL!’ guys…i want you all running at me, sabres drawn and held high…go!” it was lots of fun. and hey! no one lost an eye! bonus! (they weren’t running very fast…out of concern for aforementioned eyes.)

after that it was time for portraits with the bride & groom…one of the best times of the day!

i slowed my shutter speed way down so that when shane spun her, the motion of her dress would be captured in the images.

those guys on the right…they are not doing their best ray charles. the groom is a fighter pilot, so of COURSE the guys had to sing “you’ve lost that lovin’ feeling to the bride.” they brought down the house…it was awesome!

and last but not least, i grabbed the bride & groom and took them outside for one last smoochy shot…we played w/ the street lamps and some flash and the timbers supporting their awesome venue (the cliffside lodge in poland spring, me).

we met out in front of the town general store…a super cute cafe/convenience store/deli with squashy couches and chairs and a fridge in the back with fresh eggs.
