meg & david–engaged

today is david’s birthday (thank you very much, facebook!), so i thought it would be a good time to write about their recent engagement session.

i was down in providence after amy & ben’s (yes, the lickers) wedding, and since m&d live there and are getting married there next may, it was convenient to schedule their session for the next day.  i’m *semi* familiar with a few places in providence, so i was able to suggest a spot…and i even suggested where we could meet.  oh, yeah…that’s right.  i know the cool/hip/happening indie coffee shop in providence.  (the coffee exchange on wickenden street.)

so…we met, i showed them my sample albums real quick-like…then we piled into my car to drive to the nearby location i’d chosen.  we got out of the car, and i looked around…readying myself to give them directions.  walked around the back of the car to get my camera and shooting bag.  shooting bag & lenses…check.  camera…camera?  bueller?  bueller?  um, are you kidding me?  no.  no, i was not kidding.  i had LEFT MY CAMERA BEHIND!  lucky for me, meg and david are AWESOME and just laughed right along with me at how not-awesome i am.  and also lucky for all of us…the friends i was staying with lived pretty close by.  after an unplanned detour to collect my camera (during which i discovered that they know and love ellis paul–mmmm, blacktop train is such a freaking good song), we were back in business.  and oh, what business it was!

i’d found a sort of neglected construction site…quiet and sleepy on a sunday afternoon.  i asked them, “how do you feel about trespassing?”  they laughed and said, “clearly you JUST met us.”  oh it was ON!

these two didn’t blink when i asked them to climb on piles of broken concrete and rebar…bounded enthusiastically into the CAT tractor/machine/thingy for a makeout session, and helpfully pointed out the bloated dead fish floating by the water…in case i hadn’t eaten dinner.

i can’t wait for may 16, either, meg!

sometimes you need the “mom” shot, or the “newspaper” shot.

i looooove this first one.  and do you SEE the setting they tromped around in for me?  how can i not love them?

this was just them…being cute.  walking to the spot i told them to stand.  but c’mon…so cute!

(don’t you think they should use a version of this one for their save the dates?  i dooooo!)

about this time they found dinner for me.  such thoughtful clients, these…

oh, i should probably clarify…um, THIS happened at the end of the night.  (doesn’t my hair look PRETTTTY?  and not frizzy or pouffy at all?)

rss

so, it has recently come to my attention that my rss feed might not be working properly…mostly because i have this here blog in my OWN google reader (mmm, google reader, how i love thee), and it wasn’t showing my updates.  the last post was julia & joshua, and since i KNOW i’ve posted about 400x’s since then (most of them in the last 3 days)…i set about troubleshooting.

i just added gwynethcolleen.com to the reader instead of gwynethcolleen.com/blog and that seemed to solve it.  if you don’t use google reader and need a straight rss feed, it looks like

http://www.gwynethcolleen.com/?feed=rss2

works.

ALSO…just in case you guys didn’t know…i like comments.  so, leave me comments if you like something.  (or if you hate it…i mean…let’s keep it real, right?)

shylalalalalala

i met shyla, um…last february…ish…?  she’d just moved from southern california because she fell in love with new england.  i so get that.  she is one of those utterly delightful souls who has never met a stranger and who genuinely sees creativity and beauty in everyone.  i am not such a delightful soul…i’ve met plenty of strangers and felt no need to get to know them…so, it is nice to have shylas in my life.  (not that there is more than one shyla…i just mean those rare special beams of sunshine that brighten anyone they touch.)

we’ve had lots of adventures since then.  she came up in may and made me look freakin’ gorgeous (well, for me…i guess it’s relative.  haha.) which, apparently, i failed to blog about.  which i suppose isn’t all that weird, i fail to blog a lot of things in a timely manner.  thus, i will do a quick show and tell right here.

i think the 2nd one’s beautiful, but the first one is so…gwyn.  right?  c’mon, those of you who’ve met me…you know it’s true.

seriously…is that ME?  also, shoes:  cute, but so not comfortable.  :(

see?  she made me purty.

anyway…she came along w/ me to nicki & shane’s wedding last month.  i rarely work with another photographer, but i’ve done so more frequently of late…and it makes things so much more fun!  (and i mean…we’re already starting with a triple-scoop of fun, so it’s like…a 5-scoop sundae.  so much fun you can’t even finish it.)

i was trying to get the mom and baby interaction, but of course i was using a wide lens and somehow had tunnel vision–mom and baby–and failed to notice shy back there…of course my first instinct was, “PUT. ON. INTERNETS.”

she also stood in for me while i tested light/my flash.  she joked she needs to take this one for her “shyla’s complicated relationship with flash” memoirs.

thanks, shyla, for making my day (life) better with your shenanigans and wonderful eye for capturing beauty.

(stay tuned…when i post about nicki & shane’s fabulous military wedding…you’ll get to see some more of shyla’s talent.)

another teaser

hey fred and jessica…you’ve got something to look forward to!

teaser

hey nicki & shane…guess whose turn it is!!

everyone else…if you’re having a military wedding…puh-leaaaaase contact me to come shoot it.  i would LOVE to be a part of it…(and if you have hot single officer-guys as groomsmen, i will somehow learn to live with it.  i’m a coper, what can i say?)

so, i’m totally into awesome ways to save money shopping on the interblags, because…as my friend becky said to me last week, “what did we ever do before we could shop online?”

i failed to answer aloud, but in my head i said,
i.
do.
not.
know.

i don’t.  i mean, i freakin’ order PIZZA online!  (sadly, yes, dominos is the best of the 6 pizza places in my college town.)

anyway, ebates is cool…if you click on that link, i think you get a $5 credit or something.  i’m still figuring it out, but, essentially you get free money and/or coupons for stuff you’d buy anyway.  cool, right?

also, before buying anything online, check retailmenot to see if they’ve got a discount code?  i just saved $25 on a $75 purchase!  (so my new total was $52.)

and related to retailmenot is beatmyprice.  pretty neato.  specifically for things of an electronic or more geeky nature, dealnews does sort of the same thing.

know you like a certain brand/style of something?  don’t want to pay store price?  don’t mind if it’s a bit older?  try ebay!  lots of times people get discontinued stuff, and it’s brand new, never used…and you can get it at a discount from the original retail price.  i do this when i buy a pair of jeans or something, decide i LOOOOVE them, o noes!  they’re not in the store anymore…good thing i remember the style name.  i ask ebay, and lo and behold…there is a pair in my size.  (occasionally this strategy has cost me MORE than i paid in the first place, but when i find something that WORKS for me…i’m willing to spend a bit more for the peace of mind of knowing i am happy with the product.)

(for instance, i just bought 3 bottles of the most magical hair product ever.  i have an old bottle from a few years ago that i haven’t been using much because my hair was shorter.  but when my hair is longer, it does wonderful things.  it’s discontinued now, but i KNOW it works, so i was willing to pay a salon product price for it.  so i did.  i’m not telling how much i spent, though…haha.)

ebay doesn’t have it?  REALLLLLY love those jeans?  get ‘em duped!  (it’s pricey, so decide if it’s worth it to you.  i am actually thinking of doing this…i have some pants that i just love to bits and pieces…and when they are nothing more than bits and pieces…i want some back ups!)

for plane tickets, i always check kayak.com or travelocity and plug in “flexible dates”…(unfortunately, travelocity usually says, “oh, this price!” and then you go to select dates and they’re all sold out.  tres lame.)  for a general area of the world, try travelzoo for deals.  (and sign up for their newsletter!  it comes once a week, and i’ve gotten some great deals just because i peruse it every time it comes my way.)

i don’t buy baby/kid/mommy stuff, but my sister’s got a fantastic list of places she checks.  her favourites are mama bargains and baby steals which have a daily deal (much like woot.com).  (though, i have to tell you…i’m surprised that a site about stealing babies is allowed to stay up, just saying.)  lastly, she found a pretty good stroller in good condition on returns for sale.  (that stuff can be hit or miss.)

lastly…for eyeglasses, if you want updated lenses in your old frames, send ‘em in to 39 dollar glasses.  new lenses + anti-reflective coating runs a bit over $70.  definitely cheaper than your local lab.  willing to try new frames w/o trying them on?  you canNOT beat zennioptical’s price.  seriously.  can’t.  i have used 39 dollar glasses personally with great success, and i have friends who have ordered from zenni and been very satisfied.

i think that’s all my secrets.  have any of your own?  leave ‘em in the comments!  wow.  i am enthusiastic!

tweet, tweet

rockin’ robin…or, wait, no.  twitter.  do any of you twitter your day away?  because lately, i have been!  you follow me, i’ll follow you, and we’ll all decrease our general level of productivity!  it’ll be FABULOUS, i promise!

thanks a lot…REALITY.

so, sarahkchen (a fellow wedding photographer and fantastic person) has a pretty incredible ring shot on her blog right now…it’s gotten a lot of compliments, and i was looking at it going…i could probably create an effect like that…i’d just have to ______ and then ______ and then do ________.

i was ALL SET to haul my butt off my chair and give it a whirl, and then i was like,

“oh.
oh yeah.  i don’t HAVE a big diamond to play around with.”

and then i returned to my regularly scheduled programming, which currently…is working on chris & kate’s photos from their peak’s island october wedding and avoiding doing my oh-so-hip-and-totally-2008-not-2000 tae-bo video, that i-don’t-care-what-you-say…it totally kicks my butt!  (and then i don’t have to leave the house.  it is grey and misty and foggy and rainy.

my favourite little person

this is hafrine anne miwwow.  she just turned 2.  and her baby brother, dosua dabid miwwow will be born in a couple weeks.

she regularly speaks to baby brother and gives him kisses…one day she told her mom, my friend becky, “dosua in mah belleh.”

she said, “no, joshua’s in MOMMY’S belly.”

so katherine amended her statement.  “i have a baby miwwow in mah belleh.”

my day was brightened today when becky told me katherine said, “dwin gived me twocket,” today in the car.  (i gave her a turtle after she more or less cooperated for the shoot.)  and she also has been asking, “where’s dwin?”  “where’s dwin’s tar?  bwack tar.”

she’s a funny kid, and i’m glad that i’ll be headed back down there once baby joshua makes his appearance to catalog his early days on earth.
