jennie & joe: engaged (50s diner style!)|hampton, nh wedding photographer

i still remember very clearly the day i got jennie’s email…she wrote about how she was planning a 50s themed wedding…and i swooned.  when i came to, i responded to her email with the type-written equivalent of squeals and jumping up and down.

she wanted to do either a bowling alley or a diner for their engagement session…fast eddie’s in hampton was the PERFECT place, and the staff was so accomodating to my crazy ideas (like…letting me go behind the counter.  and not yelling at me when i stood up on one of the booth benches.)

their wedding is in the beginning of september, and…there will be swing dresses and a vintage caddy!  i can’t wait!

doesn’t jennie have pretty much the most beautiful eyes ever?

so cute! 🙂

raquel & kenneth: engaged|kittery, maine wedding photographer

sometimes i’m not very good at working on my to-do list in an orderly, sequential fashion. now is one of those times.

sarah maren flew in last thursday to shoot steph & ryan’s amazing wedding with me up in bangor, maine this past weekend. (stay tuned for more on that…you’re, uh, not going to want to miss it. i promise. no really.) she’s such a star…her flight left sacramento around 3am (thanks for the delay, jet blue!) and she got in at about 1pm EST…we headed straight up north just in time for each of us to grab our first meal of the day at about 4pm…and then that ROCKSTAR joined me in shooting an engagement session in one of my new favourite shooting spots.

shooting with 2 people is great…you get two photographers seeing the same scene in totally different ways. you’ll see what i mean. it’s not all positive, though. at least not for me. i’ll get the ugly out of the way first.

(yes, i am INCREDIBLY ATTRACTIVE when it is 4000% humidity, and i am laying on delightfully granite strewn maine coastlines. thanks, sarah!)

alright, now that that’s out of the way…let’s get on to how hott (i use 2 t’s so that you know i’m not talking about the wonderful heat and humidity we so dearly love in new england.) raquel and ken are.  because oh…they are.  also, ken is kind of a rockstar, too…he broke his arm the day before and still showed up and made the camera love him.

this is probably my favourite image from the session…and that’s saying something. also…sarah let me use her 14-24 2.8 lens. and. oh. WANT.

(these are both sarah’s)

if that one by the water wasn’t my favourite, then this one definitely is:

watching raquel and kenneth is like…watching a foreign film with subtitles.  together…they make sense.  he makes her laugh and relax, and it’s wonderful to see.  can’t wait to see you guys again in september for your wedding!  (and i’ll be bringing january along with me!)

Have I ever mentioned that you are a genius? Because seriously…

sarah & jeff: wacky bridal party!|rye, nh wedding photographer

what to do when it’s noon, at the beach, and the sun is out?

options:
1) ignore it and take photos in full sun and embrace the skull look. pirates are very en vogue these days, right?
2) commandeer the blue wall of the beach “facilities” house. (i may or may not have asked a tired bicyclist if he’d mind if we moved his picnic table aside so i could use that wall as my canvas. thanks tired bicyclist!

sub question:
what to do when the groom and his 2 stand-up-men used to be in a band together and call each other names like tater, edge, and jefe?

options:
1) break out my stern, no-nonsense “you will listen to me, and we will create amazing photo-art” persona.
2) just GO WITH IT and have some FUN! (this decision was pretty well made for me when tater revealed that his front tooth prosthetic was removable.)

WARNING: there are a LOT of images in this post! enjoy. 😀

WHO’S the big scary monsters? YOU ARE! that’s right…

i would like to point out that at this point…i was giving them NO direction. i like how edge (on the left) looks so prissy and satisfied with himself. like he’s expecting a gold star or O on his progress report.

sarah’s bouquet had a casualty…so jeff took the opportunity to do some self beautification.

actually, jeff, nasturtiums are the edible flower. i’m pretty sure lilies would taste…gross.

a brief lull wherein my gnashing teeth and pleas of, “for the MOTHERS, for the MOOOOTTHEERS!” were heard. i think this is the ONLY everyone’s smiling and no one’s doing anything wacky image i got of the whole group.

see?

this one might be my favourite…it feels like it should be in highlights for children…”figure out everything that is going on in this picture.” (also, those are my cute new crocs…not as comfortable as my other pair, but…admittedly, a little cuter.)

what started with this (i mean, c’mon…i had to do it, right?)

quickly devolved into this

and then this

and finally this

and you’d think that was as far as they could go. but you would be wrong.

the one on the end (edge) then decided they were the “manwitches”…i think maybe he’s harbouring fantasies of being viktor krum?

then we lost jeff.

it was all over. the end.

there are a LOT more amazingly fun images from this wedding, but since i’ve already posted about 42 thousand, i should probably quit. but if you want to see more, click here.

oh and also…i made sarah’s dress.  and i am proud of that. i also made the bouquets; i am proud of that, too.

Very cute 🙂

Julia30 July 2009 - 09:35

You made her dress?! The whole way through this post I kept thinking how much I loved it.. so flowy and relaxed and elegant. I’m impressed, Gwyn!

Nichole30 July 2009 - 21:15

You are amazing! You can sew? And don’t tell jenn but your bouquets came out better. The chuppa looks familiar. :). The photos came out great as always despite the sun.

Meagan18 August 2009 - 08:40

Gwyn– these pics are fantastic. I especially love when you capture candid expressions– it feels like you’re letting us in on something that we wouldn’t otherwise know. Lovely.

sarah & jeff: married|rye, nh wedding photographer

wow i have a lot to say about this wedding.  can you handle a long post?  oh good.

so, first off…the way i met sarah & jeff is a really, really funny story…and you should ask me sometime, and i will tell you, but i will not tell the entire internet.  sry.  (i know, i’m a TEASE!)

sarah comes from a big family.  like…she’s the 2nd oldest of 8 children.  7 of whom are girls.  one of the things i like about families like this is the spirit of cooperation and camaraderie they exhibit…a wedding becomes a collective project…everyone takes on a task or two and they pour their love and affection into everything and make it happen.  sarah’s wedding was no exception, but…her family largely lives in saint louis and the wedding was in nh.  sarah & jeff still wanted their wedding to have that community project feel, but the logistics of finishing up all the projects in the week before was just a little unrealistic, so their nh family banded together and pulled off a pretty amazing shindig.  friends volunteered to buy and prepare tasty picnic eats for all the guests (and it was goooood…chicken kabobs and grilled veggies! a rice dish (that i didn’t try because i’m a weirdo picky eater), chips and salsa, lemonade, peach tea, and ice cold refreshing water.)  everyone got plenty to eat…pretty fantastic.  watching the friends who volunteered to collect and transport the grills, the ones who helped prepare the food, the ones on grill duty all arrive at the beach the morning of the ceremony was a testament to the kind of people jeff and sarah are; people love them and gather around them to demonstrate their love and support.  i feel privileged to be included in that nh family that helped make this day a reality.  (sarah’s family was here the week before and made the cupcakes, threw her a bridal brunch, helped them pack their truck to move–oh, did i forget to mention they’re driving off to TN 3 days after their wedding date so jeff can start his new professor job?  they are.  both families were in town and were no slouches when it came to participating in projects left to tend to.)

if you’ve been in new england for more than 3 days this summer, chances are, it’s rained at least 2 of them.  the day started off grey with ominous drops appearing sporadically on my windshield as we drove to rye harbour.  they held off, though, and gwyn-the-photographer rejoiced at the even, grey clouds that covered the sky and diffused the light beautifully.  father michael of st. george’s delivered a touching homily–the kind only an officiant who knows and loves the couple pledging themselves to each other can prepare.  jeff and sarah served communion to the astonishing number of people who came from near and far with 2 months notice to celebrate their marriage.  and right as the ceremony was concluding…the sun came out and shone down upon them.  (everyone else was amazed and awed and touched.  gwyn-the-photographer thought, “DANGIT…there goes my perfect midday lighting!”  gwyn-the-friend agreed that it was a beautifully symbolic moment.)

this is adam. he and his bike had a run-in with the front end of a car about 2 weeks ago…miraculously, God had his hand on him, and his injuries were relatively superficial considering that his helmet broke the windshield. it’s amazing that he was still able to play the songs he’d been preparing for sarah & jeff. (some of my favourites! “come thou fount of every blessing” and “be thou my vision”.)

i don’t know who this is…but isn’t it cute?

jeff’s family watching the ceremony

they got choked up as they were saying, “in the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit, i honour you.” i was so glad to see how overcome they were by the weight of what they were promising each other…i know they will love each other well, and their relationship gives me hope…they are proof that it’s worth waiting for the right person.

this chuppah was one of my contributions to the day. becky and i made it for another mutual friend’s beach wedding, and i thought, hey! that should be reused for sarah & jeff’s wedding! in case you’re wondering, 8 foot poles WILL fit in a volkswagen golf…run them diagonally from the front passenger seat through the rear driver’s side window.

isn’t sarah beautiful?

sarah’s nephew blaze huddled close during the blessing of the elements for communion.

her other nephew, luther, is a delightful urchin…the clover, the bits of…whatever…clinging to his face…the RAAAAHHHH facial expression…i showed this image to sarah whose reaction was, “this is SO HIM!”

about halfway down the aisle they broke into a skip…very them.

they asked me to submit this one to at&t for their advertising campaign…(ok, not really, but it’s funny, right?)

like i said, the sun came out right at the end of the ceremony, so the only place with even lighting in the harsh noon sun was against this blue wall. we decided to have some fun with the bridal party (or rather, i very wisely intuited that this group would NOT get serious for me…so i might as well embrace it!)

i think those might deserve their own post, though, so…tune in later!
(i have to be up in about 4 hours to meet the happy couple for breakfast before they desert me for the hills of tennessee.)
